If you find out that you’re going to be laid off, the first thing to do is file for unemployment insurance by telephone or online. To file, you will need:


  • Your Social Security number
  • The name and complete mailing address of your most recent employer
  • The date you last worked
  • Documentation of active military service during the last 18 months
  • Your Alien Registration Number if you are not a U.S. citizen or national


Unemployment insurance does not usually begin until the third week after you file, so file right away. To file your claim or receive unemployment insurance in Missouri, call 1-800-320-2519 or go online to


If unemployment benefits are denied, you have the right to appeal this decision by mail or by fax to the address listed on the determination. Your appeal must be in writing and include:


  • Your name
  • Your Social Security number
  • The document you are appealing
  • A detailed explanation of why you disagree with the decision


If you need help until you receive benefits or if you are not eligible for unemployment insurance, you may qualify for public assistance. Contact your Family Support Division Office or click on the location of the nearest Missouri Career Center to find out if you are eligible for additional assistance.
