Feature Articles Food, Fitness and
Holidays Avoid Holiday Weight GainBy Tammy Roberts, MS, RD, LD,
It’s holiday time! A time when most of us think it’s a time to eat, drink and be merry. It seems like you’re not celebrating the holidays the way they are suppose to be celebrated unless you “indulge.” There is a way to enjoy the festivities without having to make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight. |
Eggnog can have more than 300 calories and 19 grams of fat for eight ounces. |
Here is a list of tips to keep your holidays
healthy:
-
If you go to a party, take a low calorie food that you will enjoy such as a fruit salad or vegetables with a low-calorie dip.
-
Eat a healthy snack before you go to the party so you’re not as tempted to overindulge.
-
Eggnog is a holiday favorite. Eggnog can have more than 300 calories and 19 grams of fat for eight ounces. Choose or make a low calorie version using low fat milk. If you make your own, leave out the raw eggs. The last thing you need to deal with during the holidays is a case of salmonella.
-
Watch portion sizes. Many holiday foods are tempting because it’s our only opportunity to enjoy those kinds of foods. Take a small portion and savor it.
-
Eat and chew slowly! You’ll get full faster and you may even enjoy it more.
-
If you want dessert, take only a half portion to save extra calories.
-
If you do find that you ate a little too much on one day, make up for it by being more calorie-conscious the next few days.
-
Be active! You can enjoy outdoor games with friends and family and burn calories while you are having fun. Try taking a family walk.
-
Finally, instead of making food the priority, plan on spending special time with family members or friends. Food isn’t the only thing to savor during the holidays.
Don’t let added holiday pounds be an unwanted “gift” this holiday season. Practice healthy habits and you can ring in the New Year feeling healthy.
