A credit card company will not close your account automatically just because you no longer have a balance or are not using the card. You must call the credit card company and request that the account be "closed at the customer's request." Follow up with a letter to confirm. Only do this with cards that have a zero balance, otherwise you'll be charged some hefty interest rates.
