Saving & Investing Basics: Self Study Course

In 4 lessons you can find out:

  • Where to find the money to save
  • What level of risk you are comfortable with
  • The relationship between risk and return
  • The variety of savings and investing instruments
  • How to choose a financial professional

Lesson 1: Getting Started

  • Complete a net worth statement
  • Establish an adequate emergency fund
  • Set up a regular savings program
  • Identify ways to accumulate funds to invest

Lesson 2: Stocks

  • Track investments
  • Read a prospectus
  • Use ratings information
  • How to avoid investment fraud
  • Learn about investment clubs

Lesson 3: Bonds

  • Identify various types of bonds
  • Evaluate bonds with financial publications, web sites and ratings
  • U.S. Savings Bonds as an investment tool
  • Determine percent of portfolio in bonds

Lesson 4: Selecting Professional and Mutual Funds

  • Criteria to use when evaluating instruments
  • How to read a mutual fund prospectus
  • Questions to ask when selecting a financial advisor


One lesson will be mailed to you every two weeks. Work at your own pace to complete the lessons. Small fee: $15
