Should jars and lids be sterilized before canning?
Jars and lids are sterilized during heat processing, so
it is not necessary to sterilize them before canning. To
be sure they are clean before adding food, wash them in
hot soapy water and rinse clean. The one exception is
that foods processed less than 10 minutes should be
packed in sterilized jars. Be sure to check for cracks
or chips in the jars before sterilizing.
