Quick Answers

Can canning jars used for jams and jellies be sterilized in the dishwasher?

The water in dishwashers does not get hot enough to sterilize jars. Jars must be covered with boiling (212 degrees F.) water for 10 minutes to sterilize them. Directions for sterilizing jars are in GH 1452 "Steps to Success in Home Canning." Your dishwasher may be used to clean canning jars.
