Can I make pickles in a galvanized washtub?

It is unsafe to use any galvanized container for food preparation or storage. Zinc can migrate from the container into your food and can be toxic. Instead use a stone crock, glass, unchipped enameled lined utensils, or food-grade plastic containers. Fast food establishments and wine making supply stores are often a source of large food-grade plastic containers. Non-food-grade plastic containers can also be used if they are lined with food-grade plastic bags. Meat processors will often sell large food-grade plastic bags used to package turkeys.
