Quick Answers

Why shouldn't I taste a sample of cookie dough before baking it?

Cookie dough contains raw eggs, as do many other homemade foods such as ice cream, hollandaise sauce, mayonnaise and eggnog. Raw eggs may contain the pathogen Salmonella, which can cause intestinal infections in humans. To effectively kill Salmonella, cook eggs to 160°F or until the white and yolk are firm.

See "What is Salmonella?" for more information.
