How do you roast a turkey?

Place the turkey on a rack in a roasting pan and cook in a 325F oven. If desired you may add cup water to the bottom of the pan. You may also place aluminum foil loosely like a tent for the first 1 to 1 hours. Remove the tent so that the turkey is allowed to brown. For food safety, it is better to cook stuffing separately in a casserole dish. Be sure the temperature reaches 165F. Sometimes turkeys have a "pop-up" temperature indicator. However, it is recommended that you test the temperature with your own food thermometer in several different places.

The following are approximate turkey cooking times provided by USDA:  UNSTUFFED

4 to 6 lbs. breast...1 1/2 to 2 1/4 hrs.
6 to 8 lbs. breast...2 1/4 to 3 1/4 hrs.
8 to 12 lbs............…...2 3/4 to 3 hrs.
12 to 14 lbs.....…........3 to 3 3/4 hrs.
14 to 18 lbs...…....3 3/4 to 4 1/4 hrs.
18 to 20 lbs..….....4 1/4 to 4 1/2 hrs.
20 to 24 lbs...…..........4 1/2 to 5 hrs.
