I'm having problems baking bread.  Why does the dough not rise?

If the dough does not rise, it may be due to one of the following:

  • water temperature used for dissolving yeast was too cool or too hot;
  • too stiff a dough;
  • rising place too cool; or
  • old or dead yeast.
