I've heard an advertisement for an herbal breast enhancer; could it really work?

I have heard and seen ads and products for both male and female "enhancing" products. They promise to be safe, effective and side-effect free. That should be your first "red flag" warning. Herbal supplements are best viewed as herbal "medications" and naturally have side effects.

Keep in mind the following:

  1. Herbal products are not regulated for safety or effectiveness. So what you think may be a breast enhancement product, might not contain any active ingredients at all.
  2. Breast size is determined by genetics. Exercise can help enlarge the chest muscles, and having good posture is also helpful in appearing more buxom, but there are no over the counter products that can enlarge breasts safely or effectively. If there w ere such products on the market, just think about all the breast surgeries that could be eliminated!
  3. I would be concerned about some products containing or being contaminated with female hormones--ie. estrogen, a known human carcinogen. Beware of taking any over the counter hormonal therapies without informing your doctor first.
  4. Being happy with one's own body, regardless of it's shape or size is critical. You may want to explore body image with a professional counselor.
